Why sizing from diameter alone is not enough
Two joints with the same bolt size may need very different spring packs. One may need only a modest preload reserve, while another must absorb significant settlement or thermal movement without losing sealing force.
That is why live loading washer sizing has to follow the joint behavior, not the hardware dimensions alone.
The core inputs in a sizing review
The key inputs are target clamp load, expected movement, available stack height, service temperature and environmental severity. Once those are known, the stack can be judged on spring rate and travel, not only on nominal part size.
This is especially important in flange and valve systems where the sealing window is narrow.
- Bolt size and available installation envelope.
- Required preload or packing stress window.
- Expected gasket or packing settlement.
- Temperature cycle and corrosion exposure.
Where sizing mistakes usually happen
Mistakes often come from oversimplifying the problem: copying a prior washer size, ignoring available travel or specifying a stack that is too stiff to compensate meaningfully in service.
That can leave the customer with a spring pack that looks correct dimensionally but fails to stabilize the joint.
What makes RFQ review faster
If buyers provide bolt size, sealing duty, target load and operating temperature up front, live loading sizing can move faster with fewer revision rounds.
That is usually enough for FeTech to tell whether the job can use a standard series or needs a more application-specific stack.
Haeufige Fragen
Can live loading washers be selected from bolt size only?
Not if the application is critical. Bolt size is a useful starting point, but sealing duty, travel and service severity determine whether the stack will actually work.
When should a flange or valve project ask for stack review instead of single-washer sizing?
Ask for stack review whenever preload retention, thermal movement or leakage control is a meaningful project risk.
