Why titanium cannot be treated as a drop-in replacement
Titanium alloys are attractive because they combine low density with useful corrosion resistance. However, the elastic modulus is much lower than steel, so the same geometry will not produce the same load-deflection behavior.
That is why titanium disc spring projects should begin with the target load curve and installation envelope rather than only with a material name.
Where TC4 and TC6 make sense
TC4, also known as Ti-6Al-4V or Grade 5, is the common starting point for lightweight corrosion-resistant components. TC6 can be considered where higher strength titanium performance is useful and the project can control heat treatment and certification requirements.
The strongest use cases are usually aerospace, marine, medical, precision equipment and weight-sensitive industrial mechanisms.
- Lightweight preload systems.
- Marine corrosion-resistant assemblies.
- Medical and precision equipment mechanisms.
- Custom elastic parts where low density is commercially meaningful.
How Ti-64 and 4V alloy spring requests should be read
Buyer requests for Ti-64 springs, Ti64 springs or 4V alloy springs usually point to TC4 / Ti-6Al-4V rather than a separate spring family. The useful next step is to confirm whether the project needs a Belleville washer, a disc spring stack or a custom titanium elastic component.
Because Ti-6Al-4V has a lower modulus than spring steel, the quotation should not copy a steel drawing blindly. The load curve, installation height and fatigue margin need to be checked before production.
Design checks for titanium spring components
Titanium spring parts need tighter review of fatigue margin, surface finish, working stress and galling or contact behavior. The alloy may solve a weight or corrosion problem while creating a different stiffness or wear problem if the design is copied from steel.
For this reason, titanium is best handled as a custom engineering material, not as a commodity substitute.
How to make a titanium RFQ more useful
Provide target load, permitted travel, installation space, corrosion environment, fatigue expectation and any certification requirements. If the project has an existing steel spring, share the measured load curve instead of assuming the titanium version should keep the same geometry.
This lets the supplier judge whether TC4 is enough, whether TC6 should be reviewed, or whether another material family would be more stable.
Haeufige Fragen
Can TC4 titanium replace spring steel directly?
Usually no. Titanium has a lower elastic modulus, so the spring shape, stack arrangement and working travel should be recalculated around the required load curve.
When is titanium worth the higher material cost?
It is most justified when weight reduction, corrosion resistance, non-magnetic behavior or application-specific requirements create value beyond ordinary steel or stainless options.
