Why valves lose sealing stress after installation
Even when a valve is tightened correctly during assembly, the system does not remain static. Packing settles, bolts relax, temperatures shift and vibration redistributes stress inside the joint.
That means the clamp force present on day one is often lower after the valve has been operating for a while, exactly when leakage starts to show up.
What disc springs change in the valve assembly
Disc springs add controlled elastic travel to the valve bolting or packing load system. Instead of relying entirely on a fixed bolt stretch, the assembly can absorb some movement while keeping more usable force on the sealing elements.
That is why Belleville washer stacks are widely used in live-loaded valve arrangements and severe-service sealing packages.
- Compensates for packing relaxation and wear.
- Helps absorb thermal expansion mismatch.
- Reduces how quickly preload falls away in service.
- Supports longer maintenance intervals in difficult installations.
When valve spring review becomes especially important
Some valve applications are much more sensitive to preload loss than others. High-temperature process lines, offshore valves, emissions-sensitive systems and joints with difficult maintenance access all benefit from a more disciplined spring review.
In these cases, the disc spring should be treated as part of the sealing system, not as a generic hardware item.
What buyers should provide for a useful recommendation
To recommend the right spring stack, FeTech usually needs valve type, target load or packing stress, available installation space, operating temperature and media exposure.
With those details, the discussion moves from catalog browsing to a real leakage-control solution.
Where leakage-control projects usually go wrong
The common mistake is treating the spring as a small accessory after the valve package has already been fixed. By then, available height, bolt space and material choice may be too constrained to create a strong live-loading solution.
A better approach is to include the disc spring stack early, especially when the valve handles steam, hydrocarbons, aggressive chemicals or remote service. That gives the designer room to protect retained load instead of only reacting to leakage after startup.
- Do not size only by bolt diameter if packing stress and travel are unknown.
- Do not choose spring steel automatically when temperature or media exposure is severe.
- Do not ignore stack height, guide clearance and friction in live-loaded designs.
- Do not wait for field leakage before checking retained-load margin.
Haeufige Fragen
Can disc springs completely eliminate valve leakage?
They should be treated as a load-retention aid, not a universal guarantee. Packing quality, valve condition and installation practice still matter.
When are alloy valve disc springs worth considering?
They are worth considering when valve temperature, corrosion severity or maintenance consequences make ordinary spring materials too risky.
