Why cyclic service needs a different design mindset

Static preload and high-cycle duty are different problems. In cyclic service, every deflection adds stress history, so a spring that produces the right first load may still be a poor fatigue choice.

That is why fatigue-driven projects pay close attention to geometry group, material route, surface finish and manufacturing consistency instead of quoting by OD and thickness alone.

The main fatigue-life drivers

Most fatigue problems trace back to excessive working deflection, poor stack alignment, unsuitable material for the environment or surface defects that create local stress concentration.

Good fatigue design keeps the spring inside a sensible working window and prevents the stack from becoming a tilted, friction-heavy system.

  • Working deflection and load window.
  • Material and heat-treatment consistency.
  • Surface finish and edge condition.
  • Parallel or series stack alignment under load.

Why stack design can shorten life unexpectedly

One disc spring may look acceptable on paper, but the pack can lose fatigue life if it is stacked unevenly, guided poorly or overloaded through friction and tilt. Mixed stacks need extra care when both force and travel are being pushed hard.

That is why FeTech often asks about stack layout, guide clearance and seating condition before treating a cyclic-duty inquiry as a simple washer order.

How to discuss fatigue expectations in an RFQ

If cyclic life matters, share cycle count, working deflection, frequency, temperature and media exposure. Those inputs tell FeTech whether the spring is doing light intermittent work or serious fatigue duty.

They also show whether a standard DIN 2093 solution is enough or whether the project needs a custom pack, material change or tighter surface and inspection control.

Questions frequentes

Does a thicker disc spring always last longer?

No. A thicker spring may carry more load, but cyclic durability still depends on operating stress, deflection range, surface condition and how the pack is guided in service.

When should fatigue life be discussed before quotation?

Discuss it early whenever the spring works repeatedly under load, especially in valve systems, machinery cycling duty or any assembly where replacement is costly.
